An avid bookworm since I was a little boy, I would hide under my desk while reading to keep from being interrupted. I have planned to be a writer my entire life, and The Intrepid Explorer’s Handbook to Adventure Below the Tides is my first complete work. The tidepool backdrop of The Intrepid Explorers Handbook flows from my deep, lifelong love for the ocean. Mornings spent tidepooling with my dad stand out among my earliest and fondest memories.

Studying philosophy, literature, and anthropology at Reed College in Portland, OR, filled my head with ideas to someday incorporate into my writing. Drawn to teaching, and fascinated by Japan, next I taught English to elementary and middle schoolers in a mountain village in Northern Japan for two years. My students’ boundless creativity inspired me to write stories for kids like them.

After Japan, I earned my JD from Georgetown Law and worked as a trial lawyer in Washington, D.C.. Ultimately my wife and I moved to San Francisco with our first young son for her career. I decided to stop practicing law so I could finally get writing, spend more time being a dad, and enable my wife to focus on her legal career.

Now, as a San Franciscan, I spend as much time at the ocean as I can, surfing in the fog, padding our kayak, walking our dog, or playing with my two young boys.
